23 Longyearbyen, Svalbard,
Norway Depart: 6:00PM
Longyearbyen
is in a valley on the shores of the idyllic Adventfjord, surrounded by
steep mountains and several glaciers. There are only around 25 miles of
roads in this village, which is divided into several neighborhoods,
including the town center and Nybyen (New Town), which consists of
charming miners’ barracks constructed after the war, as well
as guest houses, a restaurant and gallery, and not to mention beautiful
views of the landmark mountain, Hiorthfjellet. Be sure to visit the
Svalbard museum as a break between the plethora of activities like
summer dogsledding or cruising to the abandoned Russian city of
Pyramiden
Jul
24 Ny Alesund,Svalbard,
Norway Arrive: 8:00AM Depart: 6:00PM
Ny-Ålesund
is the northernmost settlement on Svalbard with a population of about
12 people. Here you can find an international scientific research
station. Close to the village is a breeding ground for rare geese and
arctic terns. Not far from here you may cruise your way toward the
Ossian Sars Nature Reserve, a preservation of mountains and surrounding
vegetation that is a sight to behold.
Jul
25 Bjornfjorden/Smeerenburgbreen
Glacie Arrive: 2:30AM Depart: 6:30PM
Bjørnfjorden
(The Bear Fjord) is a fjord in Albert I Land in Svalbard. Albert I Land
is the area first observed by Willem Barents in 1596, but named after
Albert I, Prince of Monaco, in honor of his exploration of Spitsbergen.
The fjord is located between Reuschhalvøya and
Vasahalvøya and is an inner branch of Smeerenburgbreen
Glacier. Smeerenburgbreen Glacier is one of the most spectacular places
of the Arctic Circle with its distinctive, sharp peaks. Your
exploration continues through Jan Mayen, where the polar bear thrives.
Enjoy wildlife viewing opportunities throughout these remote areas. Ice
and weather conditions permitting, you can spot species like the Arctic
fox as well.
CAPTAIN’S
CHOICE – Captain’s Choice ports of call add to the
sense of adventure and an element of surprise. Your ship’s
master will sail around changing weather conditions as needed and take
you to the best areas for wildlife viewing.

26 Kinnvika, Nordaustlandet,
Svalbard Arrive: 2:30AM Depart: 6:30AM
North
of the Arctic Circle, midway between mainland Norway and the North
Pole, Nordaustlandet Island is one of the three largest islands within
the Svalbard Archipelago. A narrow passage between Nordaustlandet and
Spitsbergen islands, the Hinlopen Strait is often blocked by thick ice,
but is an excellent spot to watch for Arctic wildlife. Have your
binoculars out and scan the ice floes for walruses, harp seals and
polar bears. Kinnvika is a bay on the north side of the Murchisonfjord
on the Svalbard nature reserve. Kinnvika is named after Kinneviken, a
bay in the southern part of the Swedish lake Vänern in
Västergötland.

27 Faksevagen, Alkefjellet
Svalbard Arrive: 8:00AM Depart: 6:30PM
In
this untouched and remote region, it may seem like time is as frozen as
the white and blue glaciers. You are sure to appreciate every moment in
Jan Mayen where so few travelers have ventured. With the exception of
about 20 Norwegian military and meteorology personnel, Jan Mayen is an
unpopulated volcanic island in the Arctic Ocean. It is roughly double
the size of Washington, D.C. and partly covered by glaciers.
Alkefjellet features basaltic pillars that tower vertically more than
300 feet from the waters of the Hinlopen Strait – a body of
water between Spitsbergen and Nordauslandet.

Jul
29 Sundneset,
Svalbard Arrive: 1:30AM Depart: 5:00PM
Expect
a new adventure as you set out on your journey around the smaller,
outlying area of Sundneset. Sundneset is a tundra with some rocky hills
at the southwestern corner of Barentsøya, stretching into
Freemansund. The species diversity of the tundra is as impressive as
the amount of driftwood on the coast. In particular, birders will be
especially interested in viewing the black-legged kittiwake, a coastal
bird of the Arctic to subarctic regions of the world. Kittiwakes are
almost exclusively found at sea with the exception of the breeding
period, from May to September, where they can be found nesting on the
sheerest sea cliffs.

30 Kapp Schollin/Ingeborgfjellet,
Svlbard Arrive: 2:30AM Depart: 6:30PM
As
you arrive at the bay of Kapp Schollin, you will witness magnificent
fjords and glaciers, and immerse yourself in a way of life that is only
seen at the top of the world. Ingeborgfjellet, a mountain with steep
cliffs harboring seabird breeding colonies, is situated in the
southeastern part of the site. Large fjords intersect the area, and
islands are scattered along the coast, with many of these areas hosting
breeding colonies of barnacle geese, common eiders and glaucous gulls.
The moss tundra below Ingeborgfjellet is an important pasture land for
pink-footed geese during the northbound spring migration.

30 Recherchefjorden, Bellsund,
Svalbard, Arrive: 9:00AM Depart: 1:00PM
Recherchefjorden
is a 10-foot-long glacier in Wedel Jarlsberg Land at Spitsbergen,
Svalbard. Of interest, there is a beluga whale watching and research
center nearby. Over at Camp Millar – named after a British
con man because it was thought to be near a gold mine –
anticipate photographing the adorable and diminutive Svalbard reindeer.
These animals tend to be curious and may approach you but be sure to
give it the right of way. Foraging geese are mainly found in the moss
meadows encircling the lakes scattered along the entire coastline. Most
of these lakes are fringed by vegetation composed of mosses, grasses
and sedges.
